DOCOMO’s Technical Journal (DTJ) issue in October 2025 includes dedicated NFV-related articles, which have been edited and led by contributors at DOCOMO Euro-Labs.
DOCOMO’s Technical Journal (DTJ) (https://www.docomo.ne.jp/corporate/technology/rd/technical_journal/) is an online published journal which showcases the most recent and impactful R&D outcomes from NTT DOCOMO. As part of the October 2025 issue, a series of dedicated NFV-related articles have been published, to which DOCOMO Euro-Labs members have actively contributed.
The first article, co-authored by Dr. Joan Triay, Muhammad Hamza and Yuya Kuno (from DOCOMO Euro-Labs) and Dr. Yoshihiro Nakajima (from SDD at NTT DOCOMO, INC) and titled “Overview and merits of NFV: the cloudification enabler for the mobile network infrastructure” delves into the merits of NFV as a key enabler for the softwarization of telecom networks, and in particular of DOCOMO’s mobile network.
The following article entitled “NFV extensions towards supporting vRAN and 5GC”, co-authored by Dr. Refik Üstok (at DOCOMO Euro-Labs), Dr. Joan Triay, Yuya Kuno, and Dr. Yoshihiro Nakjima focuses on the aspects of NFV and its specific technical enablers for supporting the virtualization of RAN and 5GC. The article emphasises the expansion of capabilities of NFV-based networks and the relevant standards, which together have helped NTT DOCOMO apply virtualization and cloudification technologies, not only to the core network, but also into the RAN.
Finally, the article “NFV and its ecosystem: standards and open source collaborations” co-authored by Dr. Oğuz Ülgen (also at DOCOMO Euro-Labs), Muhammad Hamza, Yuya Kuno and Dr. Yoshihiro Nakajima, reflects the importance of NFV and its ecosystem. It is worth highlighting that NFV is nurtured by many upstream technologies developed in open-source communities and other standards. Hence, it can be seen like NFV becoming “the glue” to design and deploy virtualization and cloudification technologies for telecom use cases.
