On 17 September 2024, Joan Triay, manager at DOCOMO Euro-Labs, participated to the “Cloud Native Telco” summit organized on-line by TelecomTV.
Telecom networks are undergoing a radical digital transformation due to Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) and cloud-native technologies. At NTT DOCOMO, we embarked since 2016 on this transformation journey by deploying an NFV-based 4G core network leveraging ETSI NFV standards, which has gradually been expanded to cover almost 90% of core network. The expansion of virtualization to the radio access network (RAN) is also ongoing, leveraging O-RAN Alliance standards, which also reference ETSI NFV.
In the last years, virtualization technologies have also been complemented by cloudification ones, both aiming at decoupling the network function applications from the infrastructure and platform. Use of OS containerization for deploying network functions is also spreading at high speed in the whole telco industry, together with many other cloud-native related principles. However, there is still confusion in the telecom industry about the meaning of “cloud-native”, and in particular, what it implies to telecom networks.
Dr. Triay, manager at DOCOMO Euro-Labs, and expert in the field through many years of active involvement in the development of OAM and NFV/Cloud related standards, shared his ideas and knowledge at the highly prominent TelecomTV’s on-line summit on “Cloud Native Telco”, organized from the 17th to 19th of September, 2024. Joan participated in the recorded panel discussion on “the essential components of a cloud-native strategy” and the live Q&A, together with other experts from the network operator and vendor communities.
