On the 5th February 2025, Joan Triay, Deputy Director at DOCOMO Euro-Labs, participated to the “Green Network Summit” organized on-line by TelecomTV.
TelecomTV’s “The Green Network Summit” is one of the most important on-line events in the telecom industry, when it comes to telecom networks energy savings and efficiency in telecommunication networks, gathering technical experts from various industry stakeholders.
This year’s TelecomTV “The Green Network Summit”, which ran on the 4th and 5th of February, focused on discussing the most pressing challenges that mobile network operators are facing with their RAN. For more information, see also https://www.telecomtv.com/content/the-green-network/
The radio access network (RAN) is known to be the main contributor to the energy consumption for a mobile network operator, like NTT DOCOMO. Estimates of energy consumption of RAN are in between 70-80%. Therefore, it is crucial for the network operators to tackle such demand of energy by implementing a more energy efficient RAN. Along these lines, NTT DOCOMO has committed to become carbon neutral by 2030, and zero-net by 2040 on the whole supply chain, as part of its high-level “green network targets”.
Open RAN, network virtualization and automation features, like radio intelligence controllers (RIC) are promising approaches whereby network operators could save costs in energy consumption and decrease their amount of carbon and other green-house gas emissions. Collaboration with energy suppliers is also very important in order to bring more energy related information sharing and innovative ideas to save energy consumption as well as to promote the use of green energy.
Dr. Joan Triay, Deputy Director at DOCOMO Euro-Labs, and expert in the field through many years of active involvement in the development of OAM and NFV/Cloud related standards, like in the O-RAN Alliance, shared his ideas and prospects about how Open RAN, network virtualization and RIC can help NTT DOCOMO and other network operators achieve their green network targets. Joan participated in the recorded panel discussion on “the benefits of building a green RAN” and the follow-up live Q&A on day two, together with other experts from the network operator, open source and analyst communities.
